The sound I made when I read the word “half-breed” was possibly the ugliest sound to ever escape my mouth.

Also, if I were the parent of the kilometer kid, I’d yell ALL THE CUSS WORDS at that teacher. It’s entirely possible that’ll happen someday, since I was the kid who corrected teachers back in my day. Ridiculous.

i have learned a lot in school. but what you’re going to learn about yourself (especially if you’re of a marginalized group) will be limited unless you have the good fortune to take specialized classes (oftentimes sparsely offered or not offered any at all)/ go to graduate school or do a research fellowship or independent research (not everybody has access to that).

for people without that privilege tumblr has the potential to teach you a lot. at least if you follow the right people.

Yeah, the original post is super condescending. I went to a “good” high school and got a 4.0, but the majority of my teachers didn’t teach me a damn thing. 90% of what I know about history was self-taught, I often had to correct my teachers because they would teach incorrect information (not only biased and incomplete, but flat-out WRONG). Most of the history teachers were hired to be coaches and knew little or nothing about their subjects. The English teachers were decent (although I was largely self-taught there too) and science classes were a mixed bag. The math teachers were the most consistently good, but that was the subject I was least interested in.

I’ve learned a lot from Tumblr. I wouldn’t say that I’ve learned more from Tumblr than from school, but Tumblr has definitely filled in some pretty big gaps in my knowledge. It’s easy to mock people who say that and assume they’re stupid or are bad students, but why would you? Tumblr is a valuable resource; yeah, a lot of it’s cat gifs and Benedict Cumberbatch, but there’s way more to it than that.

All in all, I think it’s pretty elitist to mock the way people choose to educate themselves. Like, no one would have ever said to me “you learn more from reading seven hours a day than you do from school??? Why don’t you just pay more attention in school???” Or “turn off PBS and the Discovery Channel and start paying attention in school!” Not everyone has good schools or good teachers (and even I, who was privileged enough to have both, didn’t have enough good teachers, and the good teachers I did have were restricted in what they were allowed to teach), so let people learn how they want. If people are able to look past all the funny gifs and whatnot and learn things, what’s wrong with that?
